Oh Lord, our great God and King, our Creator,
Grant, in your abundant mercy, that we may become poor in spirit. Grant that we may mourn with inconsolable grief. Bring us low, that we may learn to be people of meekness and humility. Even now, even here, oh Yahweh, our God, we hunger and thirst for your righteousness. Your mercy endures forever. Teach us to be merciful. Purify our hearts, and set them apart for your service. By your Holy Spirit, make peace in the world through us. And may we be plagued by persecutions in the same measure with which you bestow your righteousness upon us.
But, Lord God, in the midst of our poverty of spirit, may the kingdom of heaven be ours. In the depths of our sorrows, comfort us, so that we may comfort those who also suffer with the comfort that comes from your hand. As we follow Christ’s example of humility, may we, in our meekness, inherit the earth. Fill us, Lord God, in our hunger, with the righteousness that we glimpse in the life of our saviour, Jesus Christ. Show us mercy, as we show mercy to those around us. In purity of heart, may we see the glory of the true and living God. More than this, as we make peace in the world, may we be called children of the true and living God. And in our persecutions, may we discover, in our suffering, that the kingdom of heaven is ours.
We offer these, our humble prayers, in the strong name of Jesus, our great High Priest, through whom we can have confidence to approach your throne of grace. Pour out your mercy upon us now, we pray.
Amen.
